Where does the magic happen? 2

There will soon be a hardware update to the office you see here.

New hardware purchases from NewEgg include:

And a new purchase from AT&T includes:

  • AT&T DSL 6Mbit down .876 Mbit up
  • (Actual: 5.1 Mbit down and .654 Mbit up )  Translated: 628 KB/s down and 79 KB/s up

    AT&T bandwidth

Comments on AT&T DSL: The most interesting thing about my recent purchases is definately the AT&T interenet.  I made a specific point to ask about whether they'd have a problem with me saturating my line (using up all my bandwidth) all month long.  "No problem", they said.

Now, you have to realize that I was skeptical, since "No problem" is the same thing Comcast says, even though it's a downright lie.  Comcast will boot you off their network if you saturate your up-link or down-link all month long.

So I told them to ask a supervisor.  They came back with a response that opened my eyes and made me as giddy as a schoolgirl. "Your line is dedicated, you don't share with anyone, so you can use it as much as you want." This was a "Wow." moment for me.  With Comcast, you share your line with your your neighbors, with AT&T, you don't.

Pros: For the same price as Comcast internet, AT&T offers me the same speeds and real unlimitted usage.  Cool  There's no 600 GB down / 60 GB up cap with AT&T, as there is with Comcast. Great product / service.

Cons: Customer Service. AT&T needs to take a hint from GoDaddy and Microsoft MSDN, because AT&T's customer service is horrendous.

A day after my internet was supposed to be upgrade, I gave them a call to have them check the status.  I sat on hold for 45 minutes while I was transferred between two Indians I could barely understand.  I even got disconnected when they transferred my call and had to re-enter all my info.

I was then transferred to a local line worker, and he fixed the problem in 15 seconds. "Oh, they upgraded the upload, but not the download", he said.  "Yeah... thanks", was all I could muster. Thanks for wasting my time AT&T.  Quit paying Indians 1/8th the price of competent Americans, and I'll solve my problem in 15 seconds instead of 45 minutes.

After being spoiled by GoDaddy and Microsoft MSDN's amazing customer service, I can't stand calling AT&T.  AT&T is obviously not a customer-oriented company when it comes to customer service.  They could afford to put 100 more competent customer service reps on their phones - but they don't - and that makes them jerks.

AT&T Review: (Out of 5 stars)

Customer Service:  0 stars
Quality of Product: 5 stars
Price: 3 stars

Comments about AT&T?   Did I pay too much for my hardware upgrades?
